Tuesday, May 22nd marked the ninth annual Club Sports Awards Ceremony. This year’s festivities were held at Community College Park, directly behind the T.I. building.
Individuals from each team that participated in a club sport over the last year will be honored for their efforts on the court, diamond, rink, or field.
Mike Glass is the director of Club Sports and says it was a no brainer to have a banquet for the athletes.
“I don’t believe there was any inspiration other than I’ve always felt people needed to be recognized for their accomplishments,” Glass stated.
Over the course of the night there will be 29 winners covering 11 teams and four seasons. The night will culminate with the Coach of the Year award.
Players and coaches likely face many pressures outside of their athletic arena and it is because of that in which Glass holds all the athletes in such high regard.
“All these athletes are exciting and have a variety of responsibilities,” Glass said. “Whether it’s family, work, studies, athletics, or maybe all of them.”
Two of the brightest spots over 2006-2007 sports year were the performances of the 2006 WCC Men’s summer league baseball team, as well as the 2007 Men’s winter hockey team.
The Men’s Baseball team finished the summer season with a 14-1-1 record and was awarded the regular season title for the first time in school history.
Most recently the WCC men’s indoor soccer team capped off the year with the winter season championship.
With all of the recent success the Club Sports program isn’t going anywhere and neither is Mike Glass.
“As long as there is one student who wants to play a sport here I’ll be here,” Glass said. I’ll be here making sure that that student gets to play the sport that they love.”
