With details still developing on the tragic events that occurred at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Roanoke, Virginia, last week, some may wonder what could happen if a similar emergency occurred here at WCC.

Emergencies can happen at any place, at any time. This makes it important to know guidelines and procedures that can be used to prepare for such an event.

WCC has a policy banning weapons from being brought on campus. If a crime is occurring, WCC Campus Safety & Security advises students to first remain calm and then contact a dispatcher by dialing extension 3411 on any campus phone or (734) 973-3411 from an outside line. Give the dispatcher as much information as possible, such as location, description, whether and what weapons are involved, and a description of what is happening.

If on-campus security personnel are capable of handling the situation, the caller may be advised to keep the situation under their observation until they arrive.

Detailed maps giving locations of all emergency and house phones can be found on Campus Safety & Security's website. Cell phones do not get service in many areas in WCC buildings due to the cement used in construction. Evacuation routes are also posted on the website.

Fire systems on campus can be used to warn anyone on campus of any specific threats with new speakers that function similarly to most elementary school public address systems. This system is tested on the first Saturday of every month.

Campus Safety and Security Director Ron Schebil noted that he felt "plans that are in place would be very effective in a situation like this" and that "we would communicate with local law enforcement."

In response to the Virginia Tech shootings, Schebil said that his department was reviewing their procedures internally. The former sheriff has also been in meetings with higher-ups in the administration.

Counseling is available for students affected by the events in the counseling office on the second floor of the Student Center building.
