Lions lagging in Detroit sports

Issue date: 4/9/07 Section: Sports
Baseball season is back and for the first time in a long time, the hometown Tigers are generating a buzz that usually is reserved for only the Pistons and Red Wings.

After last year's storied turnaround, the expectations have raised from being able to show life to being there in October when everything is on the line.

With the core of last year's Tigers returning for another run at it and the acquisition of Gary Sheffield from the New York Yankees. The Tigers appear to be ready to put on a run similar to that of last years team.

As a person growing up on Detroit Sports, it's nice to see that three of the four professional sports teams that represent our state are expected to be there in the end.

The Red Wings are consistently picked to be vying for Lord Stanley's Cup.

The Pistons have been the Eastern Conference's most dominant team over the course of the last five years.

Now the Tigers can add themselves to a list that should be titled Lofty Expectations.

Tiger's fans everywhere now expect the Tigers to be playing baseball well into the fall months.

How sweet it is.

Baseball is now relevant again in Michigan, but what about football?

I don't mean the University of Michigan or the Spartans. I mean the lowly Lions.

One would hope that with all the success that surrounds the teams of Detroit that they would begin to follow suit at some point.

Fans go crazy for the Pistons, Tigers, and Wings. Fans in my generation only recently took part in the fun that was Tigers baseball, but the Lions have never generated a buzz that rivals the other three.

Mike Illich (Tigers and Wings) and Bill Davidson (Pistons) have been able to put a product or products together that fans can be proud of and enjoy routing for on a consistent basis.

William Clay Ford, Sr. on the other hand hasn't even come close and quite frankly should be embarrassed by the team he owns.

The Lions have become the laughing stock of American sports.
