WCC players celebrate after winning the 2006 summer league title this August.

With 2006 in the rear view mirror and 2007 surging ahead, it only makes sense to look back on a memorable year in sports.

While many great teams won championships in 2006, the Warriors here at Washtenaw Community College were able to claim one of their own.

During the 2006 summer league baseball season, the WCC Warriors men's squad was able to claim the regular season title. The Warriors ran through the season with a 14-1 record to secure the baseball team's first ever championship.

On February 5, the city of Detroit hosted Super Bowl XL. Although the teams featured were not from Detroit (Seattle Seahawks vs. Pittsburgh Steelers), the city welcomed home one of their own in Steelers running back Jerome Bettis.

The Steelers won the franchise's fifth Super Bowl and Bettis came home for one last hurrah as he retired immediately after the game had concluded.

Staying with football, the University of Michigan football team rebounded in a big way from the 2005 campaign in which they finished a dismal 7-5.

In 2006, the Wolverines were not expected by many to contend for a national championship, but after a 47-21 throttling of the then second ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish it became the goal for all Wolverine fans and players.

U-M dropped its final two games to Ohio State and Southern Cal, but as U-M fan Charley Russell stated, "11-2 feels a heck of a lot better than 7-5."

As most know, the Pistons faltered last season after having the franchise's best regular season ever. The team put together a 64-18 record and was able to secure home court advantage throughout the playoffs.

After rolling through Milwaukee four games to one in the first round and jumping out to a two games to none lead against Cleveland, the Pistons that everyone knew wouldn't be seen again.

After defeating the Cavs in a grueling series that went all seven games, the Pistons faced a Miami Heat squad that was gelling at the right time. The series went six games, but unfortunately for Pistons fans it was the Heat dominating for the majority of the series.

While the Pistons turned out to be a disappointment for local sports fans, all Michiganders were greeted with perhaps the surprise of the sports season in the Detroit Tigers.
