Washtenaw United Way raised more than $7 million last year and the biggest donators were at WCC to discuss projects and receive awards last Wednesday.
WCC President Larry Whitworth, who served as General Campaign Chair for the group, presented the Washtenaw United Way 2006 Campaign Celebration here at the college.
Whitworth opened with a note about Pfizer's closing and stressed that the coming years will be much more challenging. Pfizer's donations helped the Technology and Research division reach $2,027,266. The president stressed that the Pfizer had "shown the community what corporate giving is all about" and that their closing "will be felt throughout the community for years to come."
DJ Boehm, Pfizer's Global R&D Technology and Research Chair, represented the corporation at the meeting, accepting awards for being a Cornerstone Sponsor and an Exemplar Award, the highest honor available for United Way supporters.
Organizations such as General Motors, United Auto Workers, Washtenaw Intermediate School District, and Meritage Bank were present, as well as local volunteer groups and government agencies.
Pageant winner Kristina Austin Scarcelli or Mrs. Michigan also presented at the organization. Scarcelli has been working with Washtenaw United Way for roughly two years and said she was "honored" to be at the event.
Donations to Washtenaw United Way go to more than just the community, but disasters such as the 9/11 attacks and Hurricane Katrina.
