Apple shows Apple TV, iPhone
Last Tuesday at the Macworld Expo in San Francisco, California, Apple introduced the Apple TV and the iPhone.

First, CEO Steve Jobs introduced the Apple TV, formally known by its codename iTV. First previewed in September 2006, the Apple TV is a set-top box that allows the user to wirelessly stream music and video from a computer to a HDTV. It also lets the user to play protected content purchased through Apple's iTunes Store.

Apple TV has an internal 40GB hard drive, which stores the streamed content. It features component video, HDMI, and optical and analog audio ports. The device uses the 802.11n wireless standard.

The Apple TV is expected to be shipped in February for $299

Steve spent most of the time on introducing the new iPhone, the star of the Expo keynote. This new phone combines an iPod, a cell phone, and a wireless Internet communicator in one device.

Using a high-resolution 3.5 inch widescreen featuring Multi-Touch, the iPhone allows the user to use their fingers to navigate directly on the phone, without using a stylus.

The phone features three separate sensors to make it easier to use the iPhone. An accelerometer automatically rotates the screen when the user rotates the phone. A proximity sensor detects when a user lifts the phone to his ear and automatically shuts off the screen to prevent accidental touches. The ambient light sensor automatically adjusts the brightness of the screen.

The iPhone has been in development for over two years at Apple. Before the iPhone, Apple partnered with Motorola for its ROKR and SLVR cell phones, which shipped with a limited version of iTunes that allowed only 100 songs to be played on those cell phones designed by Motorola.

The iPhone is expected to be available in June 2007. It works on GSM and EDGE cellular networks and features 802.11b/g Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0 EDR wireless connectivity. It will cost $499 for a 4GB model and $599 for an 8GB model.

In the US, the iPhone will be available only through Cingular until 2009. It is expected to be available for Europe in late 2007 and for Asia in 2008. Web site
After the last couple of years, elaborate Photoshop mockups, and false starts, Apple has finally released the iPhone. :-D

Cisco sues Apple over iPhone name
Only a day after Apple unveiled its iPhone to the world, Cisco Systems filed a lawsuit to stop Apple from the using the iPhone, which they claim is theirs. Cisco is a major player in the networking industry.

Over the past year, Cisco released a series of voice over IP phone products using the iPhone name through its home networking division, Linksys.

When Cisco purchased Infogear in 2000, it also gained control of the iPhone trademark.

Apple had been negotiating with Cisco over the past two years to get permission to use the iPhone trademark for its smartphone, according to John Noh, a spokesman for Cisco.

According to Apple, it believes that it will be able to use the iPhone trademark since Apple's product is a cell phone, not a VoIP phone. Web site
Either Apple can successfully argue that the iPhone can be used under its naming system (think iMac and iPod) or it can change the name to xPhone. There's still six months to go… :-T
